Pennsylvania Truck Accident Statistics

The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) releases data about truck accidents, which is then published as truck accident statistics. The most recent data was released in 2003:

  • There are about 500,000 truck accidents throughout the United States every year.
  • Of these total truck accidents, about 5,000 end with fatalities.
  • Truck accidents account for 12% of all traffic accidents.
  • 98% of truck accidents end with a passenger fatality, rather than a truck driver fatality.
  • About 25% of truck accidents are caused by a negligent truck driver.
  • Throughout the United States there were 58,512 fatal auto crashes in 2003, of which 4669 were that of fatal big truck accidents.
  • Truck accidents are more in rural areas (68%) than in urban regions (32%), with the weekends having the majority of all fatal truck accidents at 78%.
  • Only 1% of truck accidents were caused by the influence of alcohol or drug use.
  • More than 30% of truck accidents were caused by driver fatigue due to truck drivers driving for longer than allowed periods of time and not getting enough rest in between driving periods.
  • In Pennsylvania in 2003 there were 2233 fatal traffic accidents in 2003, of which 213 were fatal truck accidents, as opposed to corresponding numbers of 2198 and 174 for the year 2002.

With truck accidents on the rise and negligent truck drivers on the roads, Pennsylvania highways are becoming more dangerous for passenger vehicles and drivers.
